One of my most recent acquisitions and quite possibly one of the best and worst surprises for me this year is the McQuarrie Concept Boba Fett figure. I found this bad boy sitting on a peg at Wal-Mart and couldn't pass up a chance to grab him. I wasn't dissapointed.
Not only does this figure feature a clean sculpt and a fairly clean almost monochrome paint scheme if not for the small places where you can find reds and blues that for some reason catches my eye more than his traditional look, but it sports quality joints. Going back to the sculpt for a second, the only place where I can find anything truly irksome would be the spiked rockets that are attacked to the backpack, which itself is removeable. They are rounded and blunted and that's not a big problem, it's just not as cool looking as the very sharp looking spikes one the concept art featured on the package. I can understand why you wouldn't want sharp pointy pieces on a kids toy. I can't fault it for that.
The paint apps are generally clean, and to be honest this incarnation of Mr. Fett has a semi-surgical look to him. It's a similar look to the monochrome scheme of the low ranking Clone Troopers and Stormtroopers. This and the sculpted goodness really do make this look like a more intimidating super-commando suit. The figure comes with a backpack that I already mentioned as well as a blaster that fits very nicely into the holster and one of my personal favorite Fett accessories, the plume of fire that comes out of his wrist-mounted flamethrower. He also comes with an alternate head that is yet another piece of concept work brought to figure form. I only wish they'd have given us all the heads from the concept work because I could honestly see myself posing the whole family together like one big happy army full of bounty hunting badasses. Badasses with hidden belly blasters.
Going back to the articulation, this figure sports an impressive list of joints and all of them are fairly sturdy and tight. By my count he's got a ball-joint neck, ball/hinge shoulders, ball/hinge elbows, swivel forearms, a swivel waist, swivel hips and ball/hinge knees. The only thing truly missing is ball/hinge ankles and in my opinion that's the worst thing about this figure. Why? It really does hinder the poseability and for a figure this cool it's a shame it can't do all the poses I can dream up for it because of those ankles.
I must say, this figure is impressive. Why would I say he's the worst surprise? Well this guy has sucked me into a Star Wars addiction. Since I bought him I've bought almost a dozen other Star Wars figures and am going out of my mind trying to get figure I never even knew I wanted. He may very well be the best, if not coolest figure I've bought in the past 3 years. I give my man Fett at 4.5 out of 5
